(Chart updated May 29, 2002) Grey & White, Campbell's/Russian Dwarf (Phodopus sungorus campbelli), MaleBorn Approximately: November 1, 1999, Bought: December 17, 1999. Died: March 25, 2000, 16:30 Died: 4.8 months old We were getting excited about going to a big pet show in Toronto, Ontario, on the March 25, 2000 weekend, and had it marked on the calendar for along time, but now it does not seem so much fun. One of our diabetic dwarves, Curly, was really sick when I started to write this. He had taken a real down turn in the last day. He ate some egg last night but this morning, he was lying on his side with labored breathing and was not responding very much at all. He did not drink any water and did not move around, he was just lying on his side. Now, he is gone, and we are both crying, it is so sad, poor little guy, we only got to spend a 3 - 4 months with him. We thought he was the healthiest of the three, but he was the first to go. We had him out in his last hours, we wrapped him in a towel, trying to feed him with an eyedropper, and so he would get liquids. We tried some diluted milk, a little Pedialyte, but he would not take any. All we could do was rub him and talk to him, and he seemed to react to that a bit. He seemed to have a last little surge of energy, took a couple of drinks, made a few squeaks, and went to the rainbow bridge while I held him. Every few minutes I got back to see if he has moved, maybe…..no, he is still. We are going to miss him lot, he was the most active of the three when we first got them. He would run in his wheel, run across the cage, up the ladder to the ledge, down again, into the outpost, back through his house and up to the cage door, over and over again. We miss you Curly Mike To My "Little Man" Life with you was so short; you came into my life being the first dwarf I had ever known. You were so small and cute and always acted like you had somewhere to go. After we first brought you home and you adjusted to your home, I would come to your cage and make sure you were okay. You would come to the door too, and put your tiny feet on the bars in a standing position looking at me as if too say, "So what are you looking at". It seemed to go on that way for sometime, so I guess we were both curious of each other. Your spunkiness and antics captured my heart. You always had many ways of catching my attention. After waking up and cleaning and eating, you would start your everyday ritual, you would run in your wheel and then charge up the ladder, look out the door, back down the ladder into your wheel, back out, and up the ladder, and sit there and look out. I know now that you were waiting for me to come to the door to open it. Then I would put your cup in your cage and you would eagerly jump into it, waiting to see were I would bring you, if it was to just play in your ball or play in my hands, maybe your big play box! It didn't seem to matter to you; you seemed to just love the attention! When you were in your cup, you would stand up as big as you can and I would always say to you "How's my Little Man". You were so small, but yet so proud. I will miss my "Little Man", but you weren't so little as you had a big impact on my heart. Good Bye my "Little Man" I would like to thank everyone for the their messages of sympathy. It seems hard, as this is the first experience of a loss of a hammy friend. Having diabetes made it seem harder, we tried many different ways to help him with writing letters, asking vets, talking to people, about ways to help him with the control of his diabetes and making sure he had the right diet. His time with us was short and taken away so quick and unexpected. So again thanks to you all for your messages. Marlene LARRYGrey & White, Campbell's/Russian Dwarf (Phodopus sungorus campbelli), MaleBorn Approximately: November 1, 1999, Bought: December 17, 1999. Died: July 19, 2000 Died: 8.5 months old I'm a diabetic Dwarf Hamster and require special care, I'm was told that I was in the worst shape of the dwarves when I was obtained, but I'm still getting around. My eyesight is not as good as before, but I still get out in my ball or just play around outside my cage on the Family Room table. I'm not a biter and I have a good disposition (too bad about the diabetes thing, I would make a good father). I'm sweet and loveable and trust my owner (which explains why I don't bite). My cage is always in order, thanks to room service. I do admit, I can be a slob sometimes. I enjoy coming out in my owner's hands and playing around the house in my ball. If I try to run away, they can always catch me as I'm slow running! I'm also a Sunflower Seed lover! Eggs are nice too, Tofu is good, but I love my Broccoli. LARRY PASSED AWAY SUDDENLY ON JULY 19, 2000 MOEBlack, Campbell's/Russian Dwarf (Phodopus sungorus campbelli), MaleBorn Approximately: November 1, 1999, Bought: December 17, 1999. Died: June 19, 2001 Died: 19 months old I'm about 6 or 7 months old. I was bought with 2 other males at the same time. The store caretaker told my owner that we were brothers, (I think this was not true). Anyway, I'm as cute as a baby dwarf. So one of my caretakers calls me "Moe baby" (thanks Suz). I know I'm not a baby but they don't realize this, so don't tell them. I don't want to chance all the affection I get. Also I'm sad to say I have diabetes. So some days I don't feel well and just want to sleep, and when I'm like this no one bothers me (which I like). When I'm in a good mood I love to play and come out of my cage and play in my ball, or just climb around on the coffee table. I live alone now due to the fact I was always getting picked on by Curly and then by Larry, after Curly died. My favorite foods are Sunflower Seeds, Wheat Germ, and Scrambled Eggs. I also have this humongous cage so the baby thing really paid off. White, Campbell's/Russian Dwarf (Phodopus sungorus campbelli), MaleBorn Approximately: November 22, 1999, Bought: January 07, 2000. Now: 16.5 months old Marlene was in a pet store called "PJ's", it is a big box super pet store in a suburban mall, in Pickering, Ontario, Canada were we live. The teenage girl / salesperson took her in the back to show her other hamsters. On the top shelf were the "returned" hamsters. They were out of the way on the highest shelf, but also likely forgotten. They were well taken care of, clean cages, food etc Marlene was told that they would eventually be put out onto the floor / self displays, "Free with Purchase of Cage". The "loss leader" in pet store advertising wars. Marlene asked why the hamsters were returned, and was told various reasons for each. She was told one dwarf was a "bitter" and that was why he was returned. He was cute, all white with pink ears, Marlene ask to see him. He was sleeping and the salesperson would not pick him up as he was a "bitter". So she poked at him with a pencil, blunt end, until he woke up, and after several more jabs to his tummy, he bit the pencil. When Marlene picked him up, he did not bite her, but he was very nervous. Most animals, when taken from a store to a home and then returned later to the store, and put half out of the way, and then when woken from sleep and poked would react in someway. Needless to say, we now have another dwarf. I wanted to name him Rescue - 1, but I was convinced by Marlene that "Munchkin" was better. There are variations, "The Munchkin", "The Little Munchkin", and "Hey There Little Man". PRISCILABrown & White, Campbell's/Russian Dwarf (Phodopus sungorus campbelli), FemaleBorn Approximately: February 7, 2000, Bought: March 26, 2000. Now: 15. 5 months old I'm a cutie; I have nice red eyes that add to my charm (Mike picked me out of the litter in the store). They say I have a perky walk, I just love to zip along the table, and I can walk around on anything and won't jump down. Also I don't bite, which makes these huge creatures love me more. I'm also a slightly diabetic, so I do require more sleep and more water (which is an never-ending supply). I don't get sweets, but I'm putting on weight as I grow up (must be the Sunflower seeds). I have a nice disposition and I'm always relaxed except for the 4-day cycle thing. Then I zip around as fast as I can, and I have discovered by smell, traces of males close by. I like Munchkin, better than Larry or Moe. When in my ball I can really move around (no speed limits yet on this autobahn….). My favorite foods are, Broccoli, wheat germ, noodles, and tofu. P.S., I love my cage to be clean & in order. SPARKWhite, Campbell's/Russian Dwarf (Phodopus sungorus campbelli), MaleBorn Approximately: February 17, 2000, Bought: February 17, 2001. Now: 16 months old Just wanted to let you know about “Spark”, a
rescue Dwarf we got from Martha. She was rescued by Martha and had an operation to remove a
Grade 2 tumor from her armpit / chest in the winter.
They were not able to remove all of the growth, but it was hoped that it
would not come back or that it was a benign growth and not malignant.
Spark is a fighter, spunky and active and responded well to Martha’s
loving care.
